The Washington Redskins are bringing back Caleb Brantley to provide depth on the defensive line.

Over the course of two years in Washington, Caleb Brantley has played in eight games. He has one total tackle.

But evidently, he has progressed enough during that time period that the Redskins like what they’ve seen.

According to the Redskins official Twitter account, the team re-signed Brantley. Brantley was looking to earn an increased role with the team last season, but a foot injury suffered in the preseason limited him to just one outing.

With a new coaching staff coming in, some wondered if Brantley would stack around as defensive tackle depth in the team’s new 4-3 alignment. Now, the question is answered and the 25-year-old will have a chance to prove himself again.

Brantley was once a highly-touted draft prospect back in 2017. And at a time, it seemed possible that he would be a first-round pick. However, character concerns dropped him to the sixth round where the Cleveland Browns scooped him up.

In his lone season with Cleveland, Brantley played 12 games totaling 18 tackles and two sacks. It looked like he had potential as a part-time pass rusher at the very least. And given his youth, there was reason to believe that he could develop into a starter.

But the Browns elected to waive him prior to the 2018 season and that’s when the Redskins got involved and claimed him. He hasn’t done much to date, but he’s still just 25. And this upcoming campaign will be crucial to his potential NFL future.

We’ll soon see if Brantley can reach his full potential. But bringing him back on what is likely to be a cheap, one-year deal seems like a good move for the Redskins. They can continue to develop him behind Daron Payne, Matt Ioannidis, and Tim Settle and see if he can stay healthy and progress. And if he can’t, they can part with him next offseason.

This is a no-risk move with a potentially solid reward. That seems to be the path that the ‘Skins are taking this offseason, and it should set up the team for future success if all goes well. And if the players like Brantley don’t pan out, the team can very easily move on from them.
