It’s peculiar that the Panthers, who hired offensive-minded head coach Matt Rhule, would make two defensive selections in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, but that’s how the board fell in this mock. Isaiah Simmons was the best player available at No. 12, and LSU cornerback Kristian Fulton is one of the best available here. If he’s not the best, then his alignment with the Panthers’ top need makes up for it.

The Panthers recently lost James Bradberry in free agency to the New York Giants, and while Donte Jackson ensures that their cupboards aren’t entirely bare, they still need a No. 1 cornerback, or a player with No. 1 cornerback potential, to match up against the NFC South’s elite cast of receivers.

If you’re going up against Julio Jones, Michael Thomas, and Mike Evans three times a year, you’d probably rather have a cornerback that doesn’t give up a lot of space. That’s the kind of cornerback Kristian Fulton is. Fulton is as fluid as they come, and he’s smooth enough to stay with receivers step for step as they engage their route stems. He’s not the boom-or-bust type that Bradberry is; instead, Fulton makes his money on making one side of the field off limits.
