Tom Brady is leaving the New England Patriots. And if he ends up with the Los Angeles Chargers, the team may have an interest in trading for Trent Williams.

The biggest news of NFL free agency broke on Tuesday morning when Tom Brady confirmed that he wouldn’t be returning to the New England Patriots. Brady made the announcement in an Instagram post and while he didn’t reveal where he’s heading next, he won’t be suiting up for the Patriots for the first time in 20 years.

At the moment, it seems that two teams are frontrunners for Brady’s services. They are the Los Angeles Chargers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Both sides have the space needed to add Brady, but the Bucs seem better built to succeed on offense with Brady at the helm.

If the Chargers want a shot at landing Brady, they’ll need to upgrade their offensive line. They have a solid guard in Trai Turner, but they had to trade left tackle Russell Okung to get him. As a result, the team needs a new left tackle and while they could look for one during the draft, they could also explore adding one on the trade market.

That’s why it might make sense for the Chargers to pursue Trent Williams. As Joe Thomas outlined on NFL Network, it’s possible that if Brady is set to join the Chargers, they could try to trade for the disgruntled Redskins tackle.

"Don’t be surprised about a trade and a new extension with Trent Williams. When you’ve got an older quarterback who doesn’t move like a Tom Brady, you want to make sure you can lock him up and protect him from that blindside spot."

That would make a lot of sense for the Chargers. Williams would be a solid left tackle option for them and would surely help to keep Brady clean moving forward. And if the 31-year-old comes cheap enough, they could still add another option to compete at right tackle in a tackle-rich draft class.

If the Chargers wanted Williams, they do have the draft capital needed to acquire him. They have second and third-round picks this year (37 and 71 overall) and if they were willing to deal the second-rounder for Williams, that would likely be enough to get him. If not, an offer centered around a third-round pick and future draft capital could work out.

The Chargers also have Hunter Henry on the franchise tag, but it’s likely they would want to keep their top tight end around to give Brady a weapon to throw to. So, he wouldn’t be trade bait.

There’s no guarantee that Brady will go to the Chargers. But if he does, this would be a prime landing spot for Williams, and Brady gets what Brady wants. That would be good news for the Redskins who have, so far, had trouble moving Williams because of their asking price for him.
