Top five offensive tackles for Redskins to target in 2020 NFL free agency
If the Redskins want to take the player with the most upside off the tackle market, that would be Jack Conklin. The former top-10 pick by the Tennessee Titans was a first-team All-Pro as a rookie. And while injuries have caused him issues since that time, he is still a solid blocker.
Last season, Conklin played a full 16 games for the Titans. The previous year, he had played in nine contests after rehabbing from a torn ACL that sidelined him in the playoffs against the New England Patriots and suffering another injury late in the season.
Conklin was far from perfect last year. He committed seven penalties and allowed four sacks. But considering that he dealt with a quarterback change, thrived as a run blocker, and was in his first full year back from an injury, he did okay.
As Conklin passes the two-year mark from his ACL surgery, he should inch closer to 100 percent. And just in the nick of time. He’ll turn 26 in August and should still have a long, strong career in front of him if he can clean up the issues that plagued him last year. At the least, he’ll be a good right tackle. And some team could flip him to the left side in hopes of him becoming a blindside blocker moving forward.
The Redskins could consider that. If they want a free-agent that will have a sure-fire shot at replacing Williams as more than a stopgap, Conklin could be their guy. They’d have to be willing to pay big money for his services, but he could end up being worth it.
It seems more likely that another team will pay up for Conklin. He is somewhat of a risky investment and with Moses still under contract, the ‘Skins may be reluctant to pay Conklin if they don’t think he can play on the left side. It’s more likely that they target a guy from the tier below in free agency. But if the Redskins want the best available tackle, it’ll be Conklin that they choose.
