The Washington Redskins are reportedly interested in former Cleveland Browns safety Damarious Randall. Here’s why he might be a good fit in Washington.

Last offseason, the Washington Redskins spent big money for safety Landon Collins. They made the former New York Giants starter the highest-paid player at the position and he helped to lock down the strong safety spot for the team. He recorded 117 tackles, four pass defenses, two forced fumbles, and a sack while mostly living up to his deal de.

This offseason, it appears that the Redskins are interested in finding a running mate for Collins. And they may look to do that on the safety market.

According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, the Redskins are among three teams that former Cleveland Browns safety Damarious Randall would “most likely entertain joining” in free agency.

This would be a smart move for the ‘Skins. The 2020 safety market is a strong and deep one. But in recent offseasons, the safety market has been a bit depressed by the number of quality players available at the position. That appears to be the case again this season, so Randall may not be too expensive.

Randall, 28 in August, is coming off a season that saw him play in 11 games, record 61 tackles, 2.5 sacks, defend six passes. For the first time in his career, he failed to log an interception for the Browns, but it’s worth noting that he had grabbed at least three picks in each of his first four NFL seasons.

The former first-round pick of the Green Bay Packers has versatility. He’s best suited to be a safety, but he does have experience at the cornerback position. And if needed, he could play in the slot. Randall (5-foot-11, 196 pounds) will have to avoid injuries — he dealt with a balky hamstring and a concussion last season — but he has played in at least 10 games in each of his five NFL seasons.

Randall would fit well as a rangy ballhawking option next to Collins. He’d replace Montae Nicholson as a starter and combining Randall’s ball skills with Collins’ elite tackling ability would upgrade the Redskins safety corps.

We’ll see if the Redskins ultimately pursue Randall. But he would ultimately make a lot of sense for the team. He’s one of the top-five safeties left on the free-agent market and would fill a big need at the position for Washington. Other options for the team could include Tre Boston and Jimmie Ward, among others.
