Ereck Flowers found success for the Washington Redskins last offseason. Now, he’ll be joining the Miami Dolphins.

It looks like the Redskins are going to have to find another option at the left guard position.

Last offseason, the team signed Ereck Flowers to a one-year deal to man the position. The former top-10 draft pick by the New York Giants had failed at left tackle, but the move inside treated him well. Flowers became a strong starter for the Redskins and it seemed like the team wanted to keep him as he was set to hit free agency.

However, Flowers won’t be sticking around in Washington. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Flowers will be signing a three-year, $30 million deal with the Miami Dolphins.

Just before the legal tampering period began, there were rumblings that Flowers would get $10 million annually on the open market. And that came true.

That said, this is a bit much for Flowers. As good as he was last year and as young as he is (26 in April), paying $10 million a year after one solid season seems like an overpay. The Dolphins do have the cap space to do this. They also need to upgrade their offensive line, so this may not necessarily be a bad move. But it’s a risk to give him Flowers this much guaranteed money.

Apparently, the Redskins agreed with that logic. According to NBC Sports Washington’s JP Finlay, they made a “legit offer” to Flowers but didn’t get to the $10 million figure.

I thought $8 million would be Flowers’ ceiling. So, it appears that the Redskins had a similar opinion.

It’s still possible that Flowers will live up to the Dolphins deal, but it’s probably a good thing that the Redskins didn’t sign him at this figure. They already have $16 million tied up in Brandon Scherff on the franchise tag, so paying $26 million total for two guards wouldn’t have been ideal.

Plus, they have Wes Martin on the roster. He can fight for the starting spot at left guard and the 2019 fourth-round pick will come significantly cheaper than Flowers (Martin will make less than $1 million).

Flowers should have a chance to find success in Miami. He was a college star there for the Hurricanes, after all. The Redskins will miss him, but keeping him at that price wouldn’t make sense. Best of luck to Flowers as he looks to continue to improve in Miami.
