Top five safeties for Redskins to target in 2020 free agency
No better safety on the market is available than Justin Simmons. You could make a case for Harris as the top option, but Simmons has him beaten ever so slightly.
Since being a third-round pick out of Boston College, Simmons has slowly but surely developed into one of the league’s best starters at safety. Over the course of the past two seasons, Simmons has been elite in coverage while also being an excellent run defender.
In short, he’s a true game-changer at the safety position.
In 2019, Simmons had his best season to date. He grabbed four interceptions while also defensing a whopping 15 passes for the Broncos. Both were career highs, and he was able to have a minuscule passer rating against of 32.1 on the season. Simmons also made 93 tackles and was solid in run support as part of a solid Broncos defense that helped carry the team amid spotty quarterback play for the first two-thirds of the season.
In Washington, Simmons would be an excellent fit next to Collins and could give the ‘Skins the best safety tandem in the NFL. At the very least, he’d be an upgrade at one position and the team wouldn’t have to worry about addressing the safety position in the draft. And that’s good news, as they haven’t had a lot of success doing that in recent seasons.
UPDATE: Simmons has been slapped with the franchise tag for the Broncos, so Harris will supplant him as the No. 1 option available among free agent safeties.
We’ll soon see if the Redskins have any safety targets on their mind. But on the free agent market, there should be no shortage of talented players available for the squad.
