Top five backup quarterbacks for Redskins to target in 2020 free agency
The Washington Redskins have a need for a veteran backup quarterback. Here a handful of players they could target to fill the void.
Whether you like it or not, it seems likely that the Washington Redskins are going to head into the 2020 season with Dwayne Haskins as their starter. The 2019 first-round pick looked abysmal in his first action as a pro but made strides throughout the season as he gained more experience.
Those strides were enough to give the Redskins confidence in his potential. So, they will almost certainly keep him as a starter barring a massive change of heart.
That said, the Redskins are going to have a need at the backup quarterback position this offseason. Both Case Keenum and Colt McCoy are set to hit free agency. And though Alex Smith may continue on the comeback trail, there’s no guarantee that he will be able to return to the field in time for the 2020 season. And it’s also possible they could try to trade him to another quarterback-needy team if he is healthy.
If the Redskins can’t retain Keenum, they’re going to have to try to find a suitable backup on the free-agent market. Though the 2020 NFL Draft class has a strong quarterback group, there simply isn’t a point in drafting and developing a guy behind Haskins when the team has so many other needs.
The team will likely look for a veteran option to help mitigate the risk of having Smith as the lone backup to Haskins. But the backup will have to come at a relatively low cost and the team will have to compete with contenders that could promise a chance to play for a playoff-caliber team in case the starter gets injured (see Matt Moore coming out of retirement to join the Kansas City Chiefs).
Here’s a look at five available quarterbacks the ‘Skins could target in the 2020 offseason. And yes, we’re only focusing on backup-caliber players and not the Tom Brady’s and Drew Brees’ of the world.
