Washington Redskins: Analyzing the right tackle position for the 2020 season
While left tackle may be the main position of need on Washington’s offensive line, do the Redskins also need to address the right tackle position this offseason?
The Washington Redskins have many questions to address when looking at their offensive line. Their star left tackle Trent Williams has been given permission to begin seeking a trade. Along with that, both of their starting guards from last season have yet to sign contract extensions with the team.
Right tackle may be another position that should be looked at as a position of need on the offensive line. In 2020, the Washington Redskins are set to enter the season with Morgan Moses as their starting right tackle followed by swing tackle Geron Christian on the depth chart.
Morgan Moses
In 2014, Morgan Moses was the 66th overall pick by the Washington Redskins. In his six NFL seasons, he has started every game since his sophomore season. While his consistency staying on the field is something the Redskins need, his production is not as admirable.
According to PFF, Moses has allowed at least five sacks every season since 2015, with his overall grade dropping every year from 2015 to 2018, until a slight increase this previous season. Moses is also a constant perpetrator of offensive penalties. Moses has ranked in the top ten of offensive tackles in penalties in three of his five full NFL seasons, with 26 penalties committed over the last two seasons.
Going into the 2020 season, Moses is set be the eighth-highest paid right tackle. Moses also carries an $8.65 million cap hit into next season. Based on these numbers, his production does not match his contract value.
Geron Christian
Geron Christian is the other option the Redskins currently have at the right tackle position. Christian was the 74th overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. Many within the organization thought Christian would develop into an NFL-caliber tackle. During his two NFL seasons, Christian has only started two games, both coming last season, allowing one sack and committing one penalty in those two games.
According to Matthew Paras, Washington’s former offensive line coach Bill Callahan did not seem to give Christian the vote of confidence at the end of the 2019 campaign. Whether this was to protect Dwayne Haskins or not, Geron Christian does not seem likely to be a starter next season.
Morgan Moses and Geron Christian should not be the Redskins’ top options to open up the season. Heading into free agency, the Redskins will have $61 million. With quality right tackle free agents available, such as Bryan Bulaga and Jack Conklin, the Redskins should consider upgrading the position.
