Round 3, Pick 2: WR Chase Claypool, Notre Dame

This probably represents what the floor is for Chase Claypool. The Notre Dame product was one of the stars of the 2020 NFL Combine and he could go higher than this. But in this simulation, he fell into the Redskins lap and they will happily take advantage of that.

Calling Claypool a big-bodied receiver is a bit of an understatement. He’s 6-foot-4, 238 pounds and during his final season with the Fighting Irish, he looked like a tight end on the field. On tape, he showed great contested catch ability, play strength, blocking prowess, and simply looked like an excellent possession receiver at the next level.

But at the combine, he showed off the speed needed to prove that he could be more than that at the next level.

Despite his thick frame, Claypool was able to log a 4.42-second 40-yard dash. He looked spry and moved well in the on-field drills and showed off great jumping ability. For his size, he is an excellent athlete and he figures to be a strong option in the NFL.

Claypool would be a nice addition to the Redskins’ young receiving corps. He’d be a solid complement to Terry McLaurin and Steven Sims, as he could be tasked with making more contested catches but still has enough speed to take the top off the defense. The Redskins may want to add a veteran receiver in free agency, but even if they do, Claypool could make a difference for the squad.

In his final collegiate season, Claypool totaled 66 catches, 1,037 yards, and 13 touchdowns. All numbers set career-high marks for Claypool.
