Round 1, Pick 2: EDGE Chase Young, Ohio State

This isn’t a pick that is going to change in the lead-up to the 2020 NFL Draft. It seems likely that the Redskins will take Chase Young if they stay put with the No. 2 overall pick. And it’s not hard to see why they want him.

Young is the best defensive player in this draft class. He’s probably the best overall player as well. He’s a great pure pass rusher who can use a variety of moves to win off the edge. Young has a very quick first step and will surely be an impact playmaker right away at the next level.

In his final season at Ohio State, Young notched a whopping 16.5 sacks and was a force off the edge for the Buckeyes. The previous year, he had 10.5 sacks for the squad. So, it’s safe to say that he was productive and that production should translate because of his ability to consistently win. And at the very least, Young could help open things up for his teammates if he can draw double teams.

For the Redskins, Young would join an already strong defensive line and could make it elite. He would play in tandem with Ryan Kerrigan and Montez Sweat and the three could rotate enough on the edge to stay fresh and generate a lot of pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

With interior talents like Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne, and Matt Ioannidis supporting that trio, the line would be far and away the strongest position for the ‘Skins.

There are other options for the Redskins with this pick. They could go with Clemson linebacker/safety/defensive playmaker Isaiah Simmons or they could try to trade down if they get a strong enough deal. Even a quarterback has been discussed. But Young is the best player here, so he should be the No. 1 option at this point in time.
