There’s an argument for a change, but modernizing historic teams doesn’t always work

Our friend Burgundy Blog provides an excellent argument for a change in uniforms. After a decade of failure under the leadership of Bruce Allen (plus the entire time Dan Snyder has owned the team), now is the perfect opportunity to completely reset the franchise. New head coach. New leadership. New uniforms.

While the Redskins have been around since 1932, their uniforms have remained pretty much unaltered, especially over the last thirty years. According to gridiron-uniforms.com, they added the ‘Redskins’ wordmark above the numbers on their 70th-anniversary home jerseys in 2002 before making it permanent in 2003. And in 2017, they darkened their shade of burgundy a little bit. That’s pretty much been it, unless I’ve missed something.

Washington hasn’t changed their uniforms that much compared to some of the other teams throughout the league. Just because other teams have modernized theirs doesn’t mean the ‘Skins have to follow suit. And changing something doesn’t necessarily make it better. It just means you changed it.

Other historical teams like the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears haven’t modernized their uniforms, and they don’t have to. Their looks work. There’s an old adage, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. Different sport, but you don’t see Yankees’ fans yelling for new jerseys every season. Their pinstripes are iconic. Modernizing a lot of the NFL’s uniforms have actually made them worse, in my opinion.

I thought the Bucs should’ve never changed from their original creamsicle look (still among the all-time best jerseys) and hope they go back to something similar in 2020. I loved the Miami Dolphins with the jerseys Dan Marino wore to finish his career instead of their modern look. I miss the basic look the Cleveland Browns used to rock. Who doesn’t miss those light blue Houston Oilers uniforms…and the Oilers in general? I thought the 49ers’ helmets looked better with a red face mask and black stripes and loved the throwback uniforms they wore in the mid to late 90s with Steve Young.
