Hill’s skills may be a bit redundant for the Redskins offense, and that’s why they may not target him. But Chase Claypool? He would add a dimension to the team that they are currently missing. Size.

The Redskins do still have Cam Sims on their roster, but the preseason stud and fan-favorite has done little to separate himself from the pack at the NFL level. The ‘Skins will give him one more chance to prove he belongs on the roster, but Claypool would give them a form of competition for the Alabama product.

Claypool has a 6-foot-4, 238-pound frame and used it well during his time with the Fighting Irish. During his final collegiate season, Claypool set career highs in every major receiving category including catches (66), receiving yards (1,037), and touchdowns (13). His yards per catch mark of 15.7 was the highest it’s been since his freshman season when he caught just five passes.

More from Riggo's Rag

Thanks to Claypool’s thick build, he’s really good at generating yards after the catch with his physicality. He can make contested catches pretty easily and high-points the balls over defensive backs and can throw them aside like rag dolls at times when they try to tackle him. He’s a decent route runner and despite his tight end-type size, he has enough speed and burst to challenge defenders vertically.

That said, Claypool’s overall athletic testing numbers will be critical at the combine. Teams will want to see exactly how fast he runs and exactly how quickly he comes out of breaks. At the very least, he will be a great contested ball catcher at the next level, but these tests will determine exactly what his athletic ceiling may be.

For Washington, Claypool would give them a true red-zone and jump ball weapon. He’d give them the size they don’t already have and, if the athletic tests go well, he will prove to teams that he can be more than just a jump-ball threat. His tape showcases that he could do this at college and if the same is true in the NFL, he could be a highly coveted player.

Claypool could go at any point from the early second-round to the early fourth-round depending on how the pre-draft process goes for him. But the Redskins should certainly be watching given that he fills a need in their receiving corps.
