Three tight ends for the Redskins to watch at the 2020 NFL Combine
The Washington Redskins’ biggest hole might be at the tight end position. Here are a few guys they should keep an eye on during the 2020 NFL Combine to potentially shore up this position.
The Redskins’ tight end position is going to look a lot different in 2020 than it did in 2019. And frankly, it’s been a few years since they’ve attempted to replace the guys atop their depth chart at the tight end position.
But in the wake of Vernon Davis‘ retirement and the release of Jordan Reed, the time has come to get fresh faces for the team’s tight end room.
Currently, the team has a handful of option at the position that should fight for back-end roster spots. Jeremy Sprinkle is a good blocker but doesn’t catch well. Caleb Wilson is a good receiver but has a thin frame. Hale Hentges has solid all-around potential. And Jerome Cunningham was signed after injuries took their toll at the position last season.
It wouldn’t surprise anyone if two or three of these players don’t make the final roster as the Redskins look to make changes at the tight end position. And they could try to add as many as three new tight ends to the roster via free agency and the draft, but it’s more likely that they will add just two.
That said, the 2020 NFL Draft is weak at tight end. There are some potential-based options in this class, but there aren’t many players that have a well-rounded skill set. So, the ‘Skins may be looking to find a solid No. 2 option instead of a true No. 1, especially since they won’t be able to address the position until the third round at the earliest.
Here’s a look at a few players the team should keep an eye on during Thursday’s tight end drills, as they may end up being targets for the Redskins come April.
Honorable Mentions: LSU TE Stephen Sullivan, LSU TE Thaddeus Moss (not working out at the combine), Purdue TE Brycen Hopkins
