Once, there was some buzz surrounding Shea Patterson as a potential early-round prospect in the 2020 NFL Draft. That chatter disappeared entirely a while back, and now, there are questions about whether or not he will actually be drafted.

During his final year at Michigan, Patterson continued to showcase that he has some talent, but lacks the overall consistency needed to be anything more than a developmental quarterback.

Patterson, simply put, is prone to long stretches of poor play. And while he’s mobile and can successfully run for yards, he doesn’t do a lot as a pocket passer. His instincts aren’t great and he tends to get rattled very easily by pressure despite his escapability. That can lead to issues seeing the field and rushing throws even when the pressure isn’t that bad.

But when Patterson is at his best, he’s accurate. He can find receivers open and hit them with good-looking passes thanks to his strong arm. But those plays are often overshadowed by his inability to get past the first read before trying to take off and make a play on the run.

Patterson may be worth a pick late on Day 3 if teams feel that his flaws are fixable. And if the Redskins feel that they’ve adequately filled their other needs by the late rounds, they could consider Patterson. He’ll be worth keeping an eye on at the very least as his athletic ability should get him noticed.

That said, how he throws in workouts will be critical, as he’ll need to show off the arm strength he has in order to really have a shot at making a team as a developmental option.
