The NFL Combine marks the most immediate checkpoint for the Redskins in their 2020 offseason, and this week, there’s a lot of ground to cover.

The NFL Scouting Combine is an annual event in which some of the nation’s top prospects organize in Indianapolis, Indiana, to partake in interviews, meetings, and on-field drills for NFL teams. The Combine is a crucial step in the evaluation process, not only to quantify prospects’ upside on the field, but also to get an idea of their mental makeup off of it. Naturally, it’s an event that garners lots of attention from the Washington Redskins new regime.

Ron Rivera has been forthcoming in describing the processes he and his coaches will use to evaluate the team he’s inherited in 2020. They’re still in the process of making final decisions on current rostered players, but at the NFL Combine, they’ll need to turn an eye to the future as well. So far, it appears as if they’re having no trouble doing that.

Per a variety of sources, the Redskins have met with several offensive prospects so far at the NFL Combine. According to Rhiannon Walker of The Athletic, the Redskins met with Dayton tight end Adam Trautman, who said that Washington also expressed an interest in him at the Senior Bowl. Trautman could be the team’s pick at No. 66 if he impresses in Combine drills. The team also met with Notre Dame tight end Cole Kmet, a slightly bigger, slightly less athletic prospect who has a good NFL profile as well.

Washington also met with a few mid-round wide receivers, per Walker and NBC Sports’ J.P. Finlay. The most high-profile of those pass catchers was Denzel Mims, who reportedly met with every NFL team. Mims, standing at around 6-foot-3, 206, has been a steady riser since 2019, and he’s likely to be gone before Washington’s third-round pick.

Some wide receivers who won’t be gone, however, include Mississippi State’s Stephen Guidry, Liberty’s Antonio Gandy-Golden, USC’S Michael Pittman Jr., Ohio State’s K.J. Hill, and South Carolina’s Bryan Edwards. Washington met with all of those receivers, showing an affinity for potential value grabs in the thick of the NFL Draft.

Of all those receivers, Mims is the clear front-runner, and opinions vary on the others. Stephen Guidry has the most upside of the group besides Mims, while the others are less dynamic, but bring other elements to the field. Personally, I’m not high on many of them, but in the middle rounds, they would be decent adds to provide depth, and in Hill’s case, familiarity for Haskins. Stay tuned for more updates on potential connections at the NFL Combine!
