5. Smith believes in the team’s young offensive talent, including Dwayne Haskins and Derrius Guice

“I’m really excited about Dwayne,” Smith said via Les Carpenter of The Washington Post. “He’s excited and energized… all he needs is time.”

That’s certainly a strong endorsement of the second-year quarterback. He’s coming off a rocky rookie campaign, but he improved greatly at the end of the season, so there’s reason to believe his upside. Smith also noted that Haskins is taking the Redskins receivers to Florida for some workouts, so perhaps that will help the group improve their chemistry ahead of the 2020 season.

Smith’s comments also suggest that the team isn’t going to be taking another first-round quarterback prospect and that their interviews with guys like Tua Tagovailoa are just due diligence as they prepare to field trade offers for the No. 2 pick.

In addition to his praise for Haskins, Smith was excited about Derrius Guice, who he believes can fill a Christian McCaffrey-type role if healthy, and Terry McLaurin, who he said “hit the ground running” as a rookie. It’ll be interesting to see if those players live up to their potential, but it does appear that Smith is confident in some of the skill position weapons the team currently has.

Overall, Smith’s press conference was refreshing and gave some insight into what the team is thinking ahead of the 2020 offseason. It’ll be interesting to see who they meet with at the combine and what prospects and free agents they end up focusing on in 2020.
