Redskins: Biggest takeaways from Kyle Smith’s press conference at NFL contract
4. Smith thinks that Trent Williams will report to the team
Just a few short months ago, it was hard to imagine Trent Williams ever playing for the Redskins again. Now, it seems well within the realm of possibility that he returns.
With Bruce Allen and the medical and training staff from last year gone, Williams has more incentive to return to the Redskins, especially given the massive need they have at left tackle.
Fortunately, Smith seems to think that Williams will report to the team to fill that vacancy.
“Trent’s under contract, and he’s one of those guys, like I mentioned before, that we expect to report,” Smith said per Kyle Stackpole.
There’s always a chance that something like this is just coach-speak/front-office-speak about how none of their players are going to hold out or demand trades. But given that Rivera and Williams seem to be having positive discussions, this does hold some weight. And if Williams does return, he’ll give the squad a much-needed upgrade at the position and will afford the team an opportunity to wait until the middle rounds of the draft to address the position.
