42. . Safety. San Francisco 49ers. Grant Delpit. 31. player

Grant Delpit is another safety who could go earlier than this. Delpit was a beast as a sophomore at LSU, but he took a step back during his junior year. His tackling wasn’t quite as good and he just seemed slightly off during the season.

That said, Delpit does still have amazing upside. And it’s possible that he was doing his best to preserve his draft stock last season while nursing an ankle injury. So, that has to be taken into account.

The 49ers are also in a position where they can afford to take a guy like Delpit. They have very few weaknesses. They could add a receiver to their roster or shore up their corner depth, but it makes the most sense for them to take the best player available. And that’s Delpit.

The 49ers are set to see safety Jimmie Ward hit free agency. If he doesn’t return, Delpit could be a nice replacement. If Delpit can hone his tackling instincts and take better angles, he could emerge as a steal. There was a time when he was considered to be a shoo-in for the top-10, so getting him in the late first round is excellent value.

Delpit (6-foot-3, 203 pounds) recorded 65 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions, and seven pass defenses last season. If he plays with the intensity and aggressiveness he did at LSU, he should be a great NFL player.
