The Washington Redskins own the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. And right now, it seems likely that they’ll keep the pick and select Chase Young.

The Washington Redskins find themselves in an enviable position in the 2020 NFL Draft. They own the No. 2 overall pick in a very solid quarterback class (at least in terms of early-round talent) and could be poised to trade down if they get the right offer.

That said, there is also an elite defensive talent likely to be on the board in Ohio State’s Chase Young. The edge rusher has logged 27 total sacks in the past two seasons and figures to be a havoc-wreaking pass rusher at the NFL level.

The Redskins will likely have options on draft day but at the moment, it seems that they are favoring one outcome over the other.

According to WalterFootball.com’s Charlie Campbell, the Redskins are “unlikely to trade down” and would need a massive package to move down.

"In speaking with sources with the Redskins, they say it is unlikely they trade down. They won’t just give the pick away, and the team would require a massive package to move down that would probably need to include multiple first-round picks and more picks on the second day of the 2020 NFL Draft, similar to what Washington dished out to move up to the second-overall pick for Robert Griffin III in the 2012 NFL Draft or what Philadelphia gave up in 2016 to get the second-overall pick and take Carson Wentz. The Redskins do not believe that any team is willing to pay what it would take to move up to the second-overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft."

And furthermore, Campbell communicated that the Redskins do love Young and the idea of pairing him with the other components on their already strong and young defensive line.

"On top of not believing a trade partner is out there, the Redskins love Chase Young. They feel they could have the makings of an elite defensive line. When asked about the difficult proposition of getting four consecutive years of first-round defensive linemen signed to second contracts, Washington sources said that will be challenging, but the organization could maybe figure out a way and deal with it when the time comes. From that conversation, it sounds like Washington is crazy for Young and it would take a ton for the team to pass on him."

No matter how you look at it, this is great news for the Redskins. If they like Young enough, they will surely make him the pick at No. 2 overall. That would add an elite-level talent to the defense and while it may not necessarily fill their biggest need, they wouldn’t have to worry about adding any other pieces to their defensive line. It would only be about extensions from here on out.

But if the team does get an offer that blows them away, they will be able to take that and add an immense amount of draft capital to their franchise as they look to build for the future. As Campbell noted, that seems unlikely at the time, but if a bidding war emerged for a guy like Tua Tagovailoa, it’s possible that the ‘Skins could get a package of multiple first-round picks and potentially multiple second-round picks. And that could help them to accelerate their rebuild.

For now, Young to the Redskins looks like the betting favorite. And it appears that the new management in Washington understands how special his talent is and they won’t make a trade down unless it’s one that really blows them away.
