Trent Williams reportedly to return to the Redskins after team cleans house
Trent Williams sat out during the Washington Redskins’ 2019 campaign amid a feud with the team’s medical staff and Bruce Allen. With those figures now gone, the latest rumors say he’ll return to the team.
Last season, the Washington Redskins suffered a big offseason loss when Trent Williams announced that he would be holding out in late June. While some expected that Williams’ holdout was related to money, it was actually related to a medical issue that had been misdiagnosed by the Redskins staff.
After suffering a health scare, Williams vowed never to play for the Redskins again and demanded a trade. Bruce Allen wouldn’t budge and reportedly didn’t even dangle Williams as a trade asset until the 11th hour of the NFL’s pre-trade deadline period. That led to more tension and Williams didn’t play at all in 2020 as a result.
But now, Allen is gone. And so too is the medical and training staff. And according to Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network, it seems that Williams is “likely to return” under new leadership.

"I made mention during The Draft Insiders podcast the belief is Trent Williams is likely to return to the Redskins since they’ve cleaned house. A source told me outright Williams will return to Washington because of Ron Rivera."
That is obviously massive news for the Redskins. Williams will be an upgrade at left tackle over what they had last year, though Donald Penn was solid enough for a 36-year-old picked up after the start of training camp. Williams is simply better at this stage in his career and if he is fully healthy after a season off, he could quickly re-emerge as a quality starter on the left side.
And if Williams is returning, this also means that the Redskins won’t be facing as much pressure to add a tackle early in the 2020 NFL Draft. The ‘Skins still certainly should invest in some competition for Morgan Moses and Geron Christian in the right tackle and swing tackle roles respectively, but in a deep tackle class, they’ll have a good shot at landing a high-upside candidate in Rounds 3 or 4.
But now, they won’t have too much FOMO about passing on the number of top-15 tackle prospects that they could’ve been tempted by had Williams not returned. And that’ll make it easier to take a guy like Chase Young with the No. 2 pick.
Williams hasn’t given the official word that he is returning, but this is another step in the right direction. It seems that Ron Rivera is already making an impact on the squad and his reputation as a great leader and better man is playing a big role in Williams’ decision.
And that certainly is a positive as the ‘Skins look to rebuild a previously broken culture with a new head coach.
