There aren’t many positions on the Redskins roster that have less talent than tight end. Austin Hooper and Hunter Henry would both be massive upgrades, but which one fits better?

The Washington Redskins tight end position is in complete disarray at the moment. They have no proven starter at the position. Vernon Davis retired ahead of free agency. Meanwhile, Jordan Reed is still in concussion protocol and the team was planning on parting with him anyway.

Beyond that, Jeremy Sprinkle, Hale Hentges, and Caleb Wilson all only seem like backup options at the NFL level while Jerome Cunningham doesn’t have much upside at all.

And the veteran option that Ron Rivera was considering ahead of free agency, Greg Olsen, has elected to sign with the Seattle Seahawks. While Olsen wasn’t a long-term fit for the Redskins, especially at a $7 million price-tag, he still represented an upgrade over what they had.

The Redskins simply need a facelift at the tight end position. They could opt to completely revamp that position and bring two players to top the depth chart while leaving Sprinkle, Hentges, and Wilson to fight for the one or two remaining roster spots.

That rebuild could begin in free agency. There are a handful of talented tight ends available on the open market, but none are better than Austin Hooper and Hunter Henry. The duo of young, dynamic tight ends are the complete package and could give the ‘Skins the all-around player they were hoping to have when Reed signed his extension with the squad.

But which one should they target? Both have their merits, but only one can come out on top in this Redskins free agency head-to-head.
