Who will be the Redskins quarterback to start the 2020 season?
While Dwayne Haskins may be the obvious choice to control the offense next season, Ron Rivera and the Redskins have many options to consider at the quarterback position.
With a new regime taking over in Washington, no one knows exactly what the Redskins will do at the quarterback position. The most likely decision would be to continue forward with Dwayne Haskins as their starting signal caller.
While Haskins struggled during his first two games as a replacement for Case Keenum, throwing four interceptions, he showed improvement after getting his first start. In his first four games as starter, Haskins threw for 661 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, while showing flashes of why the Redskins drafted him 15th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Dwayne Haskins then finished off the season on a high note, throwing for 564 yards with five touchdowns and only one interception in the final three games. Will this production be enough to convince new head coach Ron Rivera that he can be the No. 1 quarterback next season under new offensive coordinator Scott turner?
Bringing in a veteran player to compete with Dwayne Haskins is another option for the Redskins. During his introductory press conference, Ron Rivera mentioned that other veteran quarterbacks will get looks before opening the season.
One veteran player Rivera might consider is Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. Cam Newton was the quarterback when Rivera led the Panthers to a Super Bowl and could still be a good quarterback after a foot injury derailed his 2019 season. Even if Rivera does consider Newton an option, would the trade price be worth it for a team with multiple missing pieces?
Another veteran the Redskins could consider is Alex Smith. Before going down with injury in the 2018 season, Smith led the Redskins to a 6-3 record and had them on promising path to make the playoffs. After his injury, Smith sat out the whole 2019 season recovering, hopeful that he could return to football. If Smith is fully recovered, Rivera may give him an opportunity to prove he can still win in this league.
The most unlikely scenario for Washington would be selecting their new quarterback in this year’s draft. Everyone is expecting to see the Redskins use their second overall pick on Ohio State defensive end Chase Young. Could the Redskins surprise us all and take quarterback Tua Tagovailoa over top prospect Chase Young? Before he was injured, Tagovailoa was a favorite by many to be the top overall pick.
The latest reports by Ian Rapoport suggest Tagovailoa’s medical checks came back fully positive. If the Redskins think Tagovailoa is a better prospect than Haskins, there could be another draft-and trade-scenario such as the one we saw in Arizona last year with Kyler Murray and Josh Rosen.

Doug Williams recently said that the position was Haskins’ to lose, although nothing will be certain until the season kicks off. This offseason’s free agency and draft will answer plenty of these questions surrounding the Washington Redskins quarterback position in 2020 and for years to come.
