Sweet Talk: HC Ron Rivera

“My responsibility is to get the most out of the players. To work with them, teach them, mentor them. If I have to do it one by one, I most certainly will do it. I’ve done it in the past and I’ll do it again. I’ll do what I can to help these young men become not just the players we want, but the men in the community we need.”

“We need 11 guys doing one thing at a time, not one guy trying to do all 11.”

“Win the Super Bowl, and I mean it, too. The only reason you become a head coach in this league, in my opinion, is to win. That’s it, that’s the bottom line. If you do it for any other reason, you’re wrong.”

Washington Commanders

After years of listening to Jay Gruden‘s press conferences (which, mind you, weren’t always bad and at times were comical, but had worn out their welcome in his final years with the team), the Redskins faithful were treated to sweet talkin’ Ron Rivera in his introductory press conference with the team. These were a few of his best quotes, per the team’s official website, and there’s no doubt that he’ll have more in the future.

Rivera seems like a good fit for Washington. He gives them the culture change that they so desperately needed and while it’s impossible to judge him without seeing his on-field results, he’s certainly off to a solid start.

Rivera has control of the team. He’s trying to work through the Trent Williams situations. And he’s both stated that he believes in Dwayne Haskins but will hold a competition for him, which should motivate the young quarterback as he enters his second season.

The “sweet talk” has been just that so far. Sweet. If it isn’t met with on-field success, then it will fall flat.

But for now, isn’t is just so nice to hear Rivera’s goals and plans for this team?
