Valentine’s Day superlatives for Redskins ahead of 2020 offseason
Trust Me: OT Trent Williams
This one is pretty obvious. If there’s one player that the Redskins need to convince to trust in the organization, it’s Trent Williams.
Williams sat out all of the 2019 campaign due to a holdout. He was reportedly unhappy with Bruce Allen and the team’s medical staff because of a misdiagnosed medical condition that led to a health scare for him. He demanded a trade but never got it. And at the deadline, it didn’t even seem like Allen was making Williams available, perhaps to spite the veteran tackle.
But now, the Redskins have new leadership. Ron Rivera has taken over and the team has made significant changes to the front office and the medical staff. So, the question becomes, will Williams be willing to return to the team?
The answer is unclear. Rivera and Williams recently discussed the situation and the conversation was reportedly positive. It will be interesting to see how the conversations progress, but things at least appear to be trending in the right direction.
Still, Rivera should have one clear message for Williams. Trust me. Rivera needs to show Williams that the Redskins are committed to keeping him around. They want him to start and lead and though they may invest in a successor to him as well, the team is willing to do what is needed to repair the damage done by Allen and the previous medical staff.
Some may disagree with this and some may want the team to invest in a younger alternative at tackle. But Williams is still one of the better starters at left tackle in the lead and after a year off, he should be fully healthy. Getting him back and drafting a tackle in the mid-rounds of a deep 2020 class would be ideal.
But first, the Redskins need to get Williams to trust him.
