Ian Cummings: LB Cory Littleton

I don’t necessarily think that the Redskins have to go after any free agent in this class, but if I had to go all-in on one guy, I’d hone in on one of the positions that happens to have less depth in the 2020 NFL Draft. Wide receiver, offensive tackle, and cornerback are immediately disqualified, and while the tight end class isn’t overwhelmingly deep, there are a lot of good mid-round options who’ll be available for the Redskins.

The position I’m focusing on, with this one free agency choice, is middle linebacker. The Redskins linebackers have some potential, but there’s a lot of uncertainty in that regard.

Reuben Foster only recently regained feeling in his toes after suffering nerve damage in an ACL tear. Cole Holcomb showed promise in his first season, but it’s hard to tell if his bad habits in coverage are reversible to this point. The guys behind them, such as Shaun Dion Hamilton and Josh Harvey-Clemons, have upside, but are just projections.

Former Los Angeles Rams linebacker Cory Littleton could be a good fit for the Redskins in the middle of the group. Littleton is a very solid tackler with good coverage instincts and athletic ability for his 6-foot-3, 227-pound frame, and he has the experience to pace the Redskins young linebacker group, despite being just 26 years old. He won’t come cheap, in a relative sense, but the addition of Littleton could solidify one of the defensive areas that might not be so easily fixed in the NFL Draft.

If Littleton is unavailable, some other options include Joe Schobert, another young defensive playmaker, Darron Lee, a young linebacker with very impressive athleticism and developmental potential under Ron Rivera, and… Will Compton! Kidding on that last one.
