More details have emerged about Alex Smith’s recovery from a gruesome leg injury suffered during the 2018 season.

During the 2018 season, the Washington Redskins suffered a major blow to their team when Alex Smith suffered a brutal leg injury against the Houston Texans. The gruesome injury ended his ’18 campaign and sidelined him for the entirety of the 2019 season.

And now, more shocking details about the aftermath of Smith’s injury have surfaced.

As ESPN’s Stephania Bell detailed in a recent piece, Smith dealt with sepsis in the wake of that injury.

More from Riggo's Rag

"Smith developed sepsis, a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the body is fighting infection. As his medical team fought to save his life, he was under heavy sedation for pain and his memories of the early stages were limited. But there was another decision that was yet to come.Smith told [Jeremy] Schaap, “… [the] next thing I remember is waking up several weeks later faced with the decision of amputation or limb salvage at that point.”"

It was known that Smith could’ve possibly lost a limb, but the fact that he was dealing with sepsis is horrifying. He now has fully recovered from that infection and his leg has been salvaged, but as Smith noted, he is “very much lucky to be alive” after the injury.

Obviously, that’s the most important thing to come out of this situation.

That said, there’s no guarantee that Smith will return to the field despite his desire to attempt a comeback in 2020. For that reason, the Redskins need to be prepared to with a suitable backup alternative in the case that Smith isn’t ready to backup Dwayne Haskins this year.

And given Ron Rivera’s recent comments about Haskins and Smith potentially competing for the starting job, it would make sense for the squad to add a veteran who could at least challenge Haskins in his second season. Rivera’s comments are most likely coachspeak to help motivate Haskins, but nonetheless, having a viable option behind him is both important for Haskins’ growth and for the team’s potential to stay afloat should Haskins get hurt.

We’ll see what the Redskins end up doing at quarterback. But the most important part of this story right now is that Smith is alive and well. Whether or not he returns to the football field, all will be happy with that.
