Former Redskins tight end coach joining Panthers staff
The Washington Redskins former tight end coach Brian Angelichio is joining the Carolina Panthers.
For much of the offseason, the Washington Redskins have spent time picking off former members of the Carolina Panthers coaching staff. It makes sense, as new Redskins coach Ron Rivera employed many of these assistants during his time with the Panthers.
But now, the tables have turned. The Panthers are hiring a former Redskins coach for their staff.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Panthers are hiring Brian Angelichio as their tight ends coach. Angelichio spent the 2019 season as the tight ends coach for the Redskins.
During his lone season in Washington, Angelichio didn’t have much of an impact on the team. That said, it was through no fault of his own.
The Redskins top two tight ends, Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis, missed most of the season while each dealing with concussions. Angelichio was forced to use the likes of Jeremy Sprinkle and Hale Hentges in major roles at the position. So, it’s understandable why the team wasn’t able to get much production out of their tight ends in 2019, though Hentges did show some developmental potential while Sprinkle continued to block well.
Still, it’s hard to imagine that the ‘Skins will miss Angelichio much. They replaced him with Pete Hoener, a 21-year NFL veteran who has been a tight ends coach in all but two seasons since 2001. And Hoener has worked with Rivera since 2011 as the Panthers tight end coach and did great work with Greg Olsen during his career.
Hoener should work out well as a replacement for Angelichio and in all likelihood, the Redskins will add some talent of Hoener to work with at the tight end position. It will be interesting to see if he can improve the production from that position and how he fares comparatively to Angelichio with their new squads.
