Step One – Players Not to Re-sign

There are times when it is difficult to bid farewell to talented players who have been solid teammates and fan favorites.  For some players, the time has come to move on entirely and find a new football home or give in to the realities of father time.

Here is a list of pending free agents that the front office should not re-sign: Vernon Davis, Chris Thompson, Case Keenum, Colt McCoy, Donald Penn, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Tony Bergstrom, Aaron Colvin, Wendell Smallwood, and Kenny Ladler.

Davis has been a reliable soldier after signing with the Redskins late in his career. It’s difficult to move on from a player of his caliber, but the former Maryland product is very near to the end of his playing days.

Thompson has been with the Redskins since being drafted by the Redskins in the fifth round of the 2013 draft. The oft-injured running back has given everything he has to the team and while it will be difficult to see him move on, the team currently has better options on the roster.

Keenum struggled mightily in his only season with the Redskins and the journeyman quarterback will find a new home. McCoy should retire. Injuries have taken a toll on him and the former Texas Longhorn should give strong consideration to his quality of life in the years to come.

Penn and Rodgers-Cromartie are likely to retire. Bergstrom, Colvin, Smallwood, and Ladler will probably move on as each player held minor roles with little to no impact for the Redskins in 2019.
