In what might have been his farewell to the Redskins, veteran quarterback Case Keenum gave a vote of confidence to Dwayne Haskins, while also expressing his desire to earn another starting opportunity.

Case Keenum will be no more than a footnote in the Washington Redskins long and arduous quarterback history of the twenty-first century, but that isn’t entirely his fault. He’d be a valuable retainment as a backup for 2020, but Keenum has made it clear that he wants to explore other opportunities in the future. Soon to turn 32 years old, Keenum needs to use the time he has left.

Keenum started eight games for Washington in 2019. He was 1-7 as a starter for the team, but his stats were a bit more attractive, as he threw for 1,707 yards, 11 touchdowns, and five picks on over 64 percent completion. From an efficiency standpoint, Keenum wasn’t as effective as his numbers suggest, but the weekly dysfunction of the Redskins offense didn’t do him any favors.

Despite what was essentially a wasted year in Washington, Keenum isn’t bitter about how things played out, and he understands that Dwayne Haskins is an investment worth developing for the Redskins. In fact, in what might be an apparent farewell for Keenum, he gave the Ohio State product a vote of confidence as the Redskins starter moving forward.

“I think Dwayne did an incredible job towards the end of the season, adapting and getting a lot better,” Keenum said in an NFL.com article by Grant Gordon. “I think it’s his team moving forward.”

Keenum was happy to see Haskins develop down the stretch, but the consummate team mate isn’t looking to play second fiddle again. While Keenum is aware of his attractiveness in that quality backup role, he’s looking to rekindle the kind of fleeting success he had with the Vikings in 2017. In his situation, Keenum might have to earn back trust from teams. That’s a proposition he’s not unfamiliar with.

“I’d love another shot to play in this league,” Keenum went on to say in the NFL.com article. “So if there’s another chance, another opportunity out there, I’m not sure where that might be, I don’t take these things lightly. I’m going to go compete and make myself better this offseason and hopefully and be ready for whatever team might come calling.”

If Keenum’s endeavor plays out as he hopes, both he and Haskins could be starters in 2020. It’ll be an uphill battle for the former Houston Cougars legend, but Keenum is no stranger to those. There’s a reason he’s made it this far, after all. What’s going a little bit farther?
