The Washington Redskins will be looking for a new GM or President to run their front office after the 2020 NFL Draft. Marty Hurney would not qualify as the best option.

The Redskins made a necessary move this offseason when they fired Bruce Allen after a decade with the team. Allen never delivered the success promised when he came to the team and he played a role in the dysfunction that characterized the organization last decade.

That was then, this is now. The Redskins got off to a good start in the 2020 offseason when they brought in Ron Rivera as their new head coach. Rivera had a nine-year run with the Carolina Panthers and always got his teams to play hard and is a great motivator. He could have success with the Redskins and has brought with him a lot of former staffers from Carolina.

Rivera seems to be calling the shots at the moment with the front office being GM-less for a bit. The Redskins seem content to stick with Eric Schaffer, Doug Williams, and Kyle Smith in the lead up to free agency and the 2020 draft. But after that, their futures are less certain.

But one thing that appears likely is that the Redskins will want to pursue someone to run their front office. And a name popped up in rumors late on Tuesday night.

According to Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline, Ron Rivera and the Redskins may try to target current Panthers GM Marty Hurney to fill their vacancy after April’s draft.

Hurney has long been an NFL executive and served as the Panthers GM from 2002-2012 and 2017-present. He worked as part of Jack Kent Cooke’s PR staff with the Redskins around the turn of the millennium as well, so he is familiar with the Redskins.

That said, Hurney’s fit with the team wouldn’t necessarily align with what the Redskins need in the front office. Here’s why.
