Redskins interviewing Ken Zampese for quarterbacks coach position
The Washington Redskins are interviewing Ken Zampese for their quarterbacks coach position. He would be a good fit for the team.
The Washington Redskins are filling out their staff under head coach Ron Rivera. On Tuesday, it was reported that Scott Turner would be the next offensive coordinator of the Redskins.
And now, they may be focusing on hiring a quarterbacks coach to pair with him.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Redskins are interviewing Ken Zampese for their quarterbacks coach position. Rapoport broke the news on Twitter.
If there’s a reason this story sounds familiar, it’s because the Redskins actually interviewed Zampese for this position last season. Ultimately, the team hired Tim Rattay to take on the job. But now, they apparently have a renewed interest in Zampese.
Zampese has a long record of NFL success and spent 12 years as the Bengals quarterbacks coach before eventually becoming their offensive coordinator. Zampese’s offense in 2016 was a top-12 unit but it collapsed after that. It ultimately led to him being fired by the Bengals in 2017.
But Zampese has reinvented himself a bit since then. He was the quarterbacks coach for the Cleveland Browns in 2018 and helped Baker Mayfield turn in a good season that nearly won him the Offensive Rookie of the Year (he just missed out to Saquon Barkley). Zampese wasn’t retained by Freddie Kitchens in 2019 and Mayfield regressed badly. So, credit to Zampese for the work he did to help Mayfield perform so well.
Zampese coached in the AAF as the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Legends before the league folded and then went on to become an analyst at Florida. His resume is well-rounded as Rapoport said, and his work with quarterbacks like Mayfield and Andy Dalton speaks for itself.
If the Redskins can hire Zampese, it would be a good one. He’d be a veteran coach that Turner could rely on for offensive insight and he may be able to help the team get the most out of Dwayne Haskins. We’ll see what they end up doing, but bringing in Zampese for an interview seems like an excellent decision.
