The Washington Redskins are adding to their medical staff. They hired a new medical consultant, Dr. Kevin Wilk.

This offseason, the Washington Redskins are making sweeping changes to their coaching staff and front office as they look to rebuild quickly after a lost season. The team went 3-13 in 2019 and that sparked big changes from owner Daniel Snyder.

The Redskins ousted coach Jay Gruden just five games into the season. And following the campaign, Bruce Allen was fired after a decade in charge of the team.

The change continued on Tuesday morning when the Redskins addressed a need on their medical staff. According to the team’s official website, the Redskins are bringing on Dr. Kevin Wilk as their new medical consultant.

This sounds like it’s a good hire and it sounds like Snyder and Ron Rivera are confident that will help the team improve health-wise.

"“Kevin Wilk is one of the most established and successful physical therapists in our industry,” said Washington Redskins Owner Dan Snyder. “He has worked with some of the greatest athletes in sports and has known Ryan Vermillion for years. He is a great addition to our medical team and will be a tremendous asset to our players.”“Kevin is one of the most respected physical therapists in the world of sports,” said Head Coach Ron Rivera. “His addition to our organization will be extremely beneficial to our players and will take our medical staff to the next level.”"

According to the team, Wilk has worked with the likes of Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson, Drew Brees, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Eli Manning. That’s a pretty impressive resume, and landing him could be a boon for the Redskins.

The last few seasons, the ‘Skins have had massive injury issues that included landing 20-plus players on IR in three consecutive seasons. The team has seen players miss too many games and saw many injury rehabs go poorly (like Colt McCoy’s 10-month recovery from a broken leg that was supposed to sideline him from four to six weeks). Hopefully, Wilk will implement a better program to bring players back and can help focus a bit more on injury prevention.

This seems like a promising hire. Any changes to the medical and training staff should be viewed as a good thing, as it could increase the likelihood that Trent Williams will return to the team. But either way, Wilk is an accomplished physical therapist, so this move should hopefully work out.
