What happens with Trent Williams?

This is going to be one of the most important things to figure out this offseason, and it well may be the first thing that Ron Rivera needs to figure out.

Williams held out from the Redskins up until the trade deadline. He refused to appear at training camp after warning the team that he’d be holding out in June.

While the reasons behind Williams’ holdout were debated at first, Williams eventually confirmed that he was unhappy with the medical staff who had misdiagnosed a growth on his head. It turned out the growth was cancerous and Williams needed surgery on it.

But now with the medical staff and Bruce Allen gone, there is reportedly a possibility that Williams could come back. That’s not guaranteed, but Rivera could try to convince the seven-time Pro Bowler to return to the team. And after a year off, perhaps Williams’ knee, which previously gave him issues, will be healthier than before.

For the purposes of this exercise, we’re not going to make a prediction on Williams. We addressed the team’s needs as though he wasn’t returning but didn’t add any draft-pick compensation that could come from a Williams trade (likely a second-round pick). But obviously, Williams’ status will play a big role in how the ‘Skins look to build their team this offseason.
