Redskins punter Tress Way named to All-Pro second team
Tress Way had arguably the best season of any Redskins player last year. And he’s getting recognition for it.
Over the course of the past two NFL seasons, Tress Way has arguably been the best punter in the NFL. The long-time member of the Washington Redskins didn’t get a lot of recognition for it until December of this year rolled around.
Way was named the Pro Bowl punter for the NFC and joined Brandon Scherff as the only two Redskins to make the initial Pro Bowl roster. Shortly thereafter, the Redskins rewarded Way’s efforts with an extension.
And now, Way is getting even more league-wide praise.

On Friday afternoon, it was revealed that Way made the AP All-Pro second team as the starting punter. He missed out on the first-team nod to Brett Kern of the Tennessee Titans, but it was still a big-time achievement for Way.
This season, Way ranked third in net yardage among punters who punted at least 45 times during the season (44.1 yards). And his average of 49.6 total yards per punt led the NFL as well and was 1.8 yards better than the next highest candidate.
In short, Way has a big leg. He used it to help flip field position for the Redskins constantly last season. That said, he was still good at avoiding touchbacks. He pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line 30 times and only had four touchbacks. He had been better in that department the previous year with 41 punts inside the 20 without a touchback — truly a miraculous stat line — but his 2019 wasn’t too shabby either.
Kern likely got the nod over way because he was a bit better at pinning opponents deep (37 punts inside the 20) while still averaging 43.1 net yards per punt. Still, it’s a good sign that Way is getting recognition for his stellar performance in the past two seasons. He was robbed on an All-Pro spot in 2018. It’s nice to finally get something he deserves in 2019.
Hopefully, Way will continue to perform well for the ‘Skins. If he does, the team certainly won’t have to worry much about their special teams performance, at least on punts.
