Redskins: Riggo’s Rag Podcast – Analyzing the Ron Rivera hire
By Ian Cummings
Ladies and gentlemen, the Redskins have their next head coach.
It couldn’t happen without a tinge of that trademark Washington Redskins drama, but after over twenty-four hours of trepidatious anticipation, it is finally official: Ron Rivera is the new head coach of the franchise in the nation’s capital.
The acquisition of Rivera couldn’t happen without the coinciding removal of team president Bruce Allen, and the fallout of the Rivera hire is far from over. The team’s coaching staff is still being trimmed to Rivera’s preferences, and a clean sweep of both the front office and other departments is underway. The team has scheduled a press conference for Thursday, so by then, we hope to have more answers as to how the team is structured around Rivera.
While there’s still a degree of uncertainty, there is genuine reason for optimism with Rivera coming to D.C. The Redskins need a culture change, and Rivera is the one to give it to them. Rivera facilitated a similar change in Carolina in 2011, bringing them to a Super Bowl just five years after a 2-14 campaign.
Rivera is under contract for five years, so he’ll have time to make the changes that need to occur, so long as Dan Snyder gives him the patience to do so. Bruce Allen is gone, so that’s one obstacle out of the way. But there’s still a long way to go.
On the surface, how does the Ron Rivera hire shake up, and what overall grade does this acquisition earn the Redskins? What can we make of the coaching staff rumors, and how might the chaos in the front office settle? Those questions were the composite subject of our latest episode of the Riggo’s Rag Podcast. Jacob and I got together to discuss potential answers ahead of the New Year, and there’s also a quick cameo from my cat. To listen, simply click the play button below!
It’s a quick podcast; after all, it’s December 31. Enjoy this one, as we’ll have plenty more in the coming weeks, in order to break down all the latest developments. Happy New Year!
