No. 2 – Redskins defense has talent, potential with coaching

All head coaches have a focus, and while Ron Rivera would have many roles under the label of head coach, including teacher and motivator, his ultimate focus would be on the defensive side of the ball, where he has an extensive history.

Were the Redskins to pitch their job opening to Rivera, they’d be wise to use the talent they have on the defensive side of the ball. The Redskins have been consistently spending early draft capital on their defensive front, and as a result, they have a very compelling talent base, highlighted by four first-round picks: Daron Payne, Jonathan Allen, Montez Sweat, and Reuben Foster.

Additionally, the Redskins have Matt Ioannidis, one of the best pass rushing interior linemen in the NFL. They have Ryan Kerrigan, a steady veteran who could flourish with his hand plastered in the dirt. They have Cole Holcomb, a rookie who has excellent run defense instincts and athleticism. Quinton Dunbar, who blossomed into an elite cornerback this year. Landon Collins, who can wreak havoc in the box, if used correctly.

There are still holes to fill, but with a defensive coaching staff that knows how to maximize talent, a skill Greg Manusky’s staff lacked, the Redskins defense could finally play to its potential. Rivera will love the Redskins exciting front four, as he prefers to generate pressure organically, without the overuse of blitzes. And with more situational and personnel-directed awareness, he’ll be able to get the most out of a unit that’s been desperate for common sense coaching.
