Report: Trent Williams returning to the Redskins ‘a possibility’
Trent Williams held out from the Washington Redskins for the entire 2019 season. Could things change this offseason?
One of the biggest storylines of the Redskins season was the holdout of Trent Williams. The team’s long-time left tackle missed the entire season amid tensions with the team’s medical staff, who had apparently misdiagnosed a cancerous growth on his head.
Williams had vowed never to play for the Redskins again and seemingly blamed the team’s medical staff and Bruce Allen for the issue. But now, with Allen gone and the medical/training staff’s status being uncertain, could Williams return to the team?
While nothing is certain at the moment, Rhiannon Walker of The Athletic is reporting that a source said Williams returning is “a possibility”.
This is certainly encouraging for the Redskins. And while the team should still invest in a potential heir apparent for Williams in the offseason, the presence of Williams would give the team a very strong option at the left tackle position. Plus, Williams would likely be fully healthy after a year off from football.
If Williams returns, the Redskins would have three positions set for 2020. Williams would play left tackle, Chase Roullier would play center, and Morgan Moses would man the right tackle spot. Ereck Flowers and Brandon Scherff would be free agents but the team would likely re-sign one, if not, both.
That type of line, along with Wes Martin as an interior backup, would look very solid. And the only position the Redskins would need to fill would be the swing tackle spot, as Geron Christian simply hasn’t shown enough growth through two seasons to occupy that role.
The return of Williams would still take some pressure off the Redskins as they look to find tackle help. It would also help fill one of their biggest needs which would afford them to take the best player available, likely edge rusher Chase Young, with the No. 2 overall pick. They should do that anyway, but having more certainty at the tackle position would make that decision a bit easier.
By no means is Williams guaranteed to return. But the fact that he’s no longer ruling out the decision to come back is a good sign. The Redskins could benefit from his presence, so hopefully, they’ll be able to convince him to come back.
If not, then the front office is going to have to figure out a way to move Williams via trade. In that case, they would likely look to recoup the second-round pick they lost in last year’s Montez Sweat trade.
