Report: Ron Rivera hire may drag into Tuesday, but there are ‘no issues at all’
The Washington Redskins are reportedly on the verge of hiring Ron Rivera to be their next head coach. However, an announcement may not come until Tuesday.
Soon, the Washington Redskins will have a new coach. And all signs are pointing toward Ron Rivera being the next coach for the team.
Rivera’s meeting with the Redskins began on Monday and it was anticipated that it wouldn’t take very long for a deal to get done. However, as the day went along, there were fewer updates about the status of Rivera.
That was until NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport stepped in with an update.
According to Rapoport, the hiring of Rivera may drag into Tuesday. But as of this writing, there are “no issues at all”.
This is good news and will make many Redskins fans sigh with relief. Given that the team seems to have a monomaniac focus on Rivera, it would be a disaster to see this drag on for too long.
But one extra day? That’s fine, if and only if things are still going well as Rapoport reports. The team should still look to seal the deal on Tuesday and officially get Rivera on board as their next coach.
Rivera is one of the top candidates available on the coaching market. He has a career record of 76-63-1 and made four playoff appearances in nine years with the Panthers. Rivera’s Panthers also appeared in a Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos but lost the hard-fought defensive battle.
Rivera is a well-liked, respected, and aggressive head coach who could really provide the Redskins with the culture change they need. At the very least, he’ll bring energy and players will play hard for him. We’ll soon see if the deal gets done, but barring a change of heart, Rivera should be the next head coach of the ‘Skins in the near future.
