Over the course of the past couple months, there has been speculation that Alex Smith could join the Redskins front office. However, that doesn’t appear to be the case at this point in time.

For the past couple of months, there had been plenty of rumors about the Redskins making changes in the front office. That came to a head on Monday when Bruce Allen was officially dismissed by the Redskins. Not reassigned. He was officially fired.

Now, the ‘Skins are likely going to evaluate their front office. They could add some new faces to it and there are also rumblings that Eric Schaffer could get a promotion for the team, so that remains a possibility.

But one thing that isn’t likely to happen right now? Alex Smith stepping into a front office role.

According to NBC Sports Washington’s JP Finlay, Smith is focused on returning to football and isn’t interested in a front office role right now.

This isn’t a major surprise. Smith still has three years left on his contract and he probably doesn’t want to sacrifice the $20+ million annually left on his deal.

It’s also worth noting that Smith was still winning games when he last started. His stat line wasn’t very good, but the Redskins were 6-3 before Smith’s season-ending injury in 2018. He may believe he still has something left in the tank, so he isn’t ready to give up yet.

Beyond that, Smith’s goal always was to return from the catastrophic leg injury that derailed his career. He had a limb-stabilizing device on his leg for almost 10 months after surgery to ensure that he didn’t lose his leg. If he can return from that, it would be an unbelievable story.

It will be fascinating to see how the Redskins approach Smith’s future with the team. Dwayne Haskins is entrenched as the team’s starting quarterback moving forward after making some big strides toward the end of the 2019 campaign.

Smith would be an excellent backup and mentor, but at what cost to the team? They’ll have to evaluate that this offseason, and perhaps the two sides will try to restructure Smith’s deal to lower his cap number but give him more guarantees.

We’ll soon see what’s in store for Alex Smith moving forward. But needless to say, his contract and role with the team will be addressed in some way, shape, or form this offseason.
