The day after Bruce Allen, what’s next for the Redskins?
By Tim Payne
1. The Recognizable Has-Been (RHB).
This is the name most football fans have heard of but who hasn’t really accomplished a whole lot lately. In some ways, this is exactly what Bruce Allen was when Dan Snyder hired him 10 years ago. He had name recognition and had recently participated in a Super Bowl run, but had quickly followed up that success by wearing out his welcome in Tampa.
Potential RHBs this cycle include: Tom Coughlin, Jerry Reese, Ozzie Newsome, and Ryan Grigson. Each of these men participated in building Super Bowl teams in the past. They have either retired or been fired from their prior posts, but are all young enough to get back in the General Manager/Team President saddle again if the opportunity were right. And like them or not, they have championship cred.
Obviously, Ozzie Newsome is the clear-cut front-runner of this category. He’s been retired for one year and succeeded in building the current juggernaut in Baltimore as well as the former Super Bowl winners in back in 2000 and 2013. There’s no indication he’s interested in putting up with Dan Snyder or the disaster that is the Washington Redskins organization, but he should absolutely be on the short-list of phone calls Snyder should make after Bruce Allen is officially gone.
The rest of this list would be mistakes, in my opinion, as this would represent a chasing of the past, rather than moving toward into the future.
My Prediction: Newsome would not come to Washington for less than a long-term deal at $10M per year, plus an ownership stake. Translation: He’s not coming.
