Does Urban Meyer coach the Redskins in 2020?
By John Buhler
Urban Meyer was seen at FedEx Field last week, taking in a Washington Redskins game. Does Meyer end up becoming their next head coach in 2020?
The Washington Redskins were the first team to move off their head coach this season. They parted ways with Jay Gruden very early on this season, as offensive line coach Bill Callahan has filled in for them in the interim. Catching a game last week at FedEx Field was former college head coach Urban Meyer. What are the chances Meyer is the next head coach in the nation’s capital?
On this week’s episode of Stacking the Box, FanSided‘s Matt Verderame and Mark Carman, along with former NFL wide receiver Earl Bennett, make sense of why Meyer was in Landover last week and if he will end up being the next head coach of the Redskins in 2020 (42:15).
Bennett is in on this, as he points out that Meyer is the type of guy that likes to make his presence known. He had briefly retired previously from coaching for health reasons after leaving the Florida Gators before he went to the Ohio State Buckeyes. Meyer might be really good as an analyst for FOX, but we can’t really believe he’s done coaching at this stage of his life.
While Verderame doesn’t believe that Meyer will be coaching in Washington next season, he does believe that he will be coaching in the division, as he expects Meyer to replace Jason Garrett as the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Verderame feels Meyer was using the Redskins as leverage to get a better deal out of Jerry Jones in Dallas, but he could still end up in Washington.
Many of Meyer’s former players are in Washington. The Redskins’ franchise quarterback Dwayne Haskins last played for Meyer at Ohio State. The same thing applies to rookie wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who was Haskins’ teammate in Columbus playing for Meyer. Also, injured Washington quarterback Alex Smith starred in college for Meyer when they were with the Utah Utes.
Overall, it does seem at this point if Meyer is going to coach in 2020, it will be in the NFL as opposed to major college football. Unless another blue-blood college job magically opens up, Meyer isn’t going back to college in 2020. As for the NFL, it all comes down to money and having complete control of the football operation. Will Washington or Dallas be willing to give it to him?
