Three takeaways from Redskins Week 16 loss to the Giants
2. Steven Sims Jr. should start in the slot next season
He’s quick. He’s athletic. He’s explosive. And he’s starting to prove himself.
For yet another week, the Redskins got a strong performance out of Steven Sims Jr. The undrafted rookie out of Kansas has made a lot of plays when given the chance this season and now, it looks like he’s establishing himself as a true weapon in the receiving corps.
While Sims was mostly used as a kick returner and a gadget player on offense earlier in the season, his usage has increased week to week. And once Trey Quinn went down, Sims took over as the top man in the slot. And in that role, he has thrived.

Sims’ great burst and ability to find space quickly make him an ideal fit for the slot. He gets open early, often, and can generate yards after the catch. That’s how he was able to catch six passes for 64 yards and two touchdowns. He just knows how to get open, and he can do it in the red zone. That skill is an excellent one to have, especially for a slot receiver.
Because of his performances so far this season, it’s fair to say that Sims has won an opportunity to start in the slot in 2020. Sure, the team may still add some competition. But between him, Terry McLaurin, and Kelvin Harmon, the team has some really solid building blocks in the receiving corps.
It’s nice to see that the Redskins young weapons are developing. It’s yet another silver lining in what has been an otherwise disappointing season for Washington.
