Redskins vs. Giants: Keys to victory in Week 16 of the 2019 season
By Kyle Hundley
5. Redskins must win the turnover battle
The first matchup between these two teams had turnovers and lots of them. On the day, the Redskins and Giants each turned the ball over four times in what was a rather ugly affair. For as opportunistic as the ‘Skins defense was at taking the ball away, it mattered little as the offense had four interceptions from Case Keenum (one) and Dwayne Haskins (three).
Washington has done a good job of protecting the football in the last couple of weeks. They turned the ball over just once against Green Bay and once against Philly, a Haskins’ fumble on the last play that we’re not going to count here. The problem is the last couple of weeks the defense hasn’t been creating many turnovers (no interceptions and recovering just two fumbles).
The Redskins must win the turnover battle this week. Daniel Jones will start again this week after missing time with an ankle injury. Like most rookies, he has struggled at times with turnovers, throwing 11 interceptions on the season. He’s also had his issues with fumbles. Quinton Dunbar intercepted him twice in their first game, but is out along with some of the other secondary.
Those who play must step up and make the most of their opportunity. If the Redskins can force Jones and the Giants into some turnovers (hopefully four again), they likely will wrap up their home finale with a win.
