The Washington Redskins were unable to beat the New York Giants in a 41-35 overtime thriller.

The Washington Redskins didn’t go quietly into the night despite trailing the New York Giants by as many as 14 points on Sunday. They didn’t give up after Dwayne Haskins exited the game with an ankle injury.

They didn’t end up winning, but they showed some fight by getting the game to overtime and falling in a 41-35 thriller.

Neither defense played well in this contest, and the Redskins secondary looked particularly bad. Forced to use a patchwork unit of Aaron Colvin, Danny Johnson, and Coty Sensabaugh as their starters, they simply couldn’t contain the Giants passing game. Daniel Jones threw for five touchdowns and never really looked bothered at any time in the content.

However, Dwayne Haskins pretty much matched him blow for blow before his injury struck. Haskins ended up going 12-of-15 for 133 yards and two touchdowns on the day. He looked comfortable in the pocket and threw a number of pretty passes, including one to Steven Sims Jr. for a touchdown.

Sims had a great day for the Redskins and was productive for both Haskins and Case Keenum, who was excellent in relief of the rookie (16-of-22 for 158 yards and 1 TD). Sims caught six passes for 64 yards and two touchdowns, trailing only Terry McLaurin (7 catches, 86 yards) in receiving. It looks like Sims will be the favorite to start in the slot next year after that performance.

The moment of the game was Keenum’s 99-yard TD drive late in the game, as it was one of the best Redskins drives of the season. Had draft positioning not been on the line, fans would have been very happy to see that type of drive. And they would have been equally annoyed by Bill O’Brien‘s choice to kick an extra point instead of going for two.

And as for the team’s draft positioning, they did improve from the No. 4 pick… to the No. 2 pick by virtue of their loss and the Dolphins’ win over the Bengals. If the Redskins hold onto the No. 2 pick next week, they may get a legitimate shot at drafting Ohio State edge rusher Chase Young, who is considered to be the best prospect in this class.
