Bonus Stud – Connections

Everyone says you need connections to be successful and to be granted opportunities, and while that might not be true as an absolute, it certainly helps. It’s no different in the football world, where pre-existing connections, team loyalty, and nepotism run amuck, almost to a fault.

One notable connection made its way into the luxury suite at FedEx Field on Sunday. Former Ohio State coach and college football national champion Urban Meyer was seen in Washington’s suite, sitting next to quarterback Alex Smith, whom he coached at Utah in the early 2000s.

People were quick to point out that Meyer could be a coaching candidate for the Redskins, as he’s speculated to be interested in reprising his role as a coach. In Washington, he’d be reunited with several former players, such as Smith, Dwayne Haskins, and Terry McLaurin. Kevin O’Connell also has experience with Ryan Day, who ultimately replaced Meyer as the Buckeyes head coach.

That said, it’s still unlikely that Meyer becomes Washington’s coach. The possibility can’t be ruled out, but it’s completely possible he came to the game because of his former players. Analyst Mark Bullock said on Twitter that all the reporters he spoke to shot down suggestions of Meyer becoming a coaching candidate, and said that, at most, Meyer would be consulted in the Redskins’ search.

You can decide how much smoke you want to see here, but media members aren’t basking in the fumes. If nothing else, it’s nice to have connections in the NFL. Because connections, even after being broken apart, always seem to find their way back together somehow.
