Eric Bieniemy

According to Pro Football Network’s Benjamin Allbright, Eric Bieniemy may be an early frontrunner for the Redskins coaching job.

Bieniemy, the Chiefs offensive coordinator, has done a lot of great work along with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City, and he could be one of the next great offensive coaches in the league.

And as NBC Sports Washington’s JP Finlay noted, Alex Smith could have an impact on the team’s interest in Bieniemy. Finlay writes that Smith’s “influence seems to be growing at Redskins Park”, so perhaps he’ll be able to lure the assistant, who he worked with from 2013 to 2017, to the ‘Skins.

Bieniemy was ranked as my top head coaching candidate for the Redskins after the ouster of Jay Gruden. Here’s what I said about his potential in that piece.

"[Bieniemy] has done a great job of seamlessly taking over for the team’s former coordinator turner Bears head coach, Matt Nagy, and has done well to create a well-balanced offense. Despite having turnover at receiver and running back (especially after the release of Kareem Hunt), Bieniemy has been able to find ways to keep the Chiefs offense clicking. He has integrated a number of different pieces into the unit including Sammy Watkins, Mecole Hardman, Damien Williams, LeSean McCoy, and Demarcus Robinson and deserves credit for being able to get the most out of them."

Verdict: If Bieniemy can get the most out of the Redskins’ young talent and continue to develop Dwayne Haskins, he could be an ideal fit in Washington. The fact that they’re interested in Bieniemy is encouraging, and Bieniemy could end up being a really good option for the team. And his relationship with Smith could make him a realistic option as well.
