We talk about potential change for the Redskins front office all the time. But it hasn’t often been entertained as a realistic solution. Could that be changing?

The Washington Redskins haven’t had a good 2019 season, but the team’s recent 3-9 slate is only a footnote in what’s been a historic two-decade stretch of dysfunction and unrealized promise under owner Dan Snyder.

For a long time, that dysfunction has gone unaccounted for; Snyder has maintained a distance when he needs to intervene, and a callous tendency to intercede when distance is needed. And his team president Bruce Allen has overseen football operations with almost no positive long-term results.

The team’s long-standing tradition of failure has caused many to deem them too far gone. But could things be changing in D.C.? A recent repot from CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora alludes to this possibility.

Per La Canfora, who cited unnamed sources, Snyder is “beginning to understand the gravity of his situation and that major changes could be coming to the Skins front office this week”.

The article referenced an interest among D.C. front office members in Stanford head coach David Shaw as a potential long-term coaching candidate in 2020, as well as other various high-profile possibilities. That said, La Canfora said that Bruce Allen’s role with the team is a deal breaker for many coaching candidates, and that Snyder may be beginning to understand that.

It’s worth noting that La Canfora doesn’t have a spotless track record as an NFL insider, but he was right about the Trent Williams situation from the beginning. He’s been in tune with happenings in D.C. this year, and while nothing is a guarantee, there’s no reason to wholly discredit his latest report.

If Snyder truly has come to an epiphany of sorts, then change could be on the horizon. But pinpointing when exactly that change will occur is a tough task. As our own Tim Payne noted in his Week 14 Reality Checks, Snyder could time his front office changes with the league meetings coming up, as he did with Vinny Cerrato years earlier. Such a move would give Snyder and Co. time to preface the coaching search before the end of the year, just as the Panthers did last week.

Whatever the case, there’s still a lot more to this situation, and events still need to play out before conclusive judgements are made. If the Redskins beat the Packers today, it could be the boost Bruce Allen needs to stick around. Snyder has shown that lack of foresight before.
