Dud: The running game

Since taking over the Redskins, interim head coach Bill Callahan has had one goal. And that’s to run the ball.

However, the team hasn’t had tangible success with that measure. And on Sunday, they really had trouble getting the run game going.

Overall, the ‘Skins generated 86 yards on the ground on 24 carries. Those numbers aren’t very good. And when considering the Lions entered the game allowing 124.2 rushing yards per game (good for a bottom-10 mark league-wide) it’s even more disappointing.

Callahan simply never let either of his backs get in a rhythm. He used Derrius Guice and Adrian Peterson equally (10 carries each) and Guice averaged 3.2 yards per carry while Peterson averaged 2.7. That’s nothing to write home about.

Moving forward, it would behoove the Redskins to ride the hot hand a little bit more and give each back a chance to establish himself. Once one back starts making plays, it would be best to stick with him. And with Guice now having played two full games, he may be the best bet, as he is fresher and AD is a bit banged up.

If the Redskins offense wants to score more, they’ll need the run game to work better. It’s up to Callahan and O’Connell to figure this out moving forward to ensure that too much pressure doesn’t fall on Dwayne Haskins.
