Redskins vs. Lions: Keys to victory in Week 12 of the 2019 season
By Kyle Hundley
4. Redskins must do a better job covering tight ends against the Lions
One of the many things the Redskins did not do well on Sunday (or pretty much all season) was cover the tight end. Jets’ tight end Ryan Griffin caught all five of his targets for 109 yards and a touchdown as he looked unstoppable.
The Lions invested the eighth overall pick in his years draft in Mackey winner T.J. Hockenson (someone I was extremely high on) to help shore up the tight end position. So far this season, Hockenson hasn’t quite exploded onto the scene the way some thought he would and had just one catch against the Cowboys.
Hockenson could be in for a big game against the Redskins linebackers (look at Griffin’s season numbers before he played the ‘Skins) as Greg Manusky’s defense doesn’t appear to have an answer against athletic tight ends. Even though he had an interception, Jon Bostic must be better in the middle of the field and the secondary must step up after last week’s poor performance.
If Hockenson has a game similar to his debut, the Redskins will have a tough time stopping Detroit on Sunday.
